The outdoor pool at Brockwell Lido is holding a free open weekend to mark the start of its 2011 swimming season on April 2 and 3rd. Swimming will be free to all comers, and there will also be a range of free poolside activities and taster classes in the studios.

The Lido, surrounded by the Art Deco buildings has always been a great place to spend summer days, and every year the growing popularity of open water swimming seems to gain momentum. This year the Lido season has been extended and will stretches from April to October.

One of London's few remaining outdoor swimming pools the water temperature in April is predicted to be chilly but the café will be open for warming snacks and healthy treats.

The Lido, and its recently added gym and leisure facilities, is now home to a variety of clubs and activities from aquathlons, mid winter swimming, junior ballet and holistic classes, a triathlon club and the dynamic Whippersnappers. Swimming lessons are supplied by a resident teacher, Lido Mike.

Ian Farlane Divisional Sports and Community Development Manager commented: "The Lido is now a real centre of life in Brixton and Herne Hill as well as attracting swimmers and sunbathers from across London. We have a keen group of great early dippers who jump in at 6.30am on weekdays, with school groups and other swimmers using the pool until 8pm in the evenings. Over the weekend opening times run from 8am to 6pm and when the weather warms up we’re hoping for a record number of visitors in 2011.”
