The Big Swim in Southwark
Dive into art and swim through a cloud of light and colour. As part of the London 2012 Open Weekend, Camberwell Leisure Centre will host ‘The Big Swim’ on Saturday 23 July from 5pm to 9pm. The event will be one of many in Southwark helping start the one year countdown to the Games.
The event is free and open to all. To take part, please turn up at the centre between 5pm and 9pm. It gives everyone the chance to experience swimming in a cloud of light and colour, based on the five Olympic colours: blue; yellow; purple; green and red.
The Big Swim is an art installation in the swimming pool and encourages playful art experiences and promotes local community interest in swimming, ahead of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
The project has been awarded the Olympic Inspire Mark and is created by artist Tine Bech. The Big Swim is part of the Creative Campus Initiative – a scheme run by the University for the Creative Arts and is the largest Cultural Olympiad programme.
The work is concerned with facilitating a playful arts and sport swimming experience. Focused on light, colour and locality, the project is intentionally accessible and aims to enhance familiar surroundings through a captivating community experience.
There are many other free activities happening across our Southwark sites during the 2012 Open Weekend, including table tennis, mini water polo and triathlon challenges, so please ask for a leaflet at reception.
