The Mole Valley team, which consisted of over 200 youth people aged 7 – 15 years, beat off competition from the ten competing Surrey districts and boroughs to become overall winners of the 2010 P&G Surrey Youth Games (SYG) competition for the first time in the games’ fourteen year history.

This outstanding achievement took place at the Surrey Sports Park over the weekend of 19th/20th June 2010, where 2000 young competitors from across Surrey took part in the County’s largest youth sporting festival, the 2010 P&G Surrey Youth Games.

The Mole Valley team had previously taken part in training sessions covering thirteen sports at the games, in a bid to represent their district.  The youth games provided non-county standard athletes the opportunity to compete for the first time and can lead to many of them taking up a new sport and further developing these new skills.

Following a very tough two-day competition and some fantastic performances, Mole Valley were crowned the best team of young athletes in the County; a tremendous achievement. Of the 24 teams that were entered to make up the Mole Valley team an incredible thirteen achieved a top three finish, including the following successes:

GOLD MEDALS:
• Senior Girls Netball (School years 9 and 10)
• Tennis (School year 3)

SILVER MEDALS :
• Junior Squash mixed (School years 3 – 6)
• Senior Badminton mixed (School years 7, 8 and 9)
• Girls Basketball (School years 7, 8 and 9)
• Junior Girls Football (School years 3 and 4)
• High 5 Netball mixed (School years 5 and 6)
• Golf (School years 7, 8 and 9)
• MLD Boys Football (School years 9 and 10)

BRONZE MEDALS:
• Junior Netball mixed (School years 7 and 8)
• Boys Basketball (School years 7, 8 and 9)
• Senior Squash mixed (School years 5 – 7)
• Judo Senior Girls (School year 6 – 11)

Councillor Kathryn Westwood, Member of the Executive, said “This is a wonderful achievement by Mole Valley’s young sports stars, who have all displayed a tremendous level of dedication and hard work and fully deserve all that they achieved over the weekend. I am confident that this, our first success in the Surrey Youth Games competition, will mark the beginning of many more to come in the future. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Leatherhead Leisure Centre and Fusion Lifestyle for sponsoring the Mole Valley team this year”.
