£12.6 million redevelopment of Leatherhead Leisure Centre

Leatherhead planned redevelopment CAD view

The £12.6 million refurbishment of Leatherhead Leisure Centre is now underway following a meeting of the Council's Executive on 12th February 2009 when they approved the proposed scheme. Work commenced at the end of February on what is a major facelift for the popular leisure facility.

As part of the £12.6 million refurbishment a brand new state of the art fitness suite will be constructed at the front of the centre together with a purpose built soft play and adventure play area. It is anticipated that these two new facilities along with a new crèche will be open in November this year.

A new ground floor entrance to the centre and a new café and bar will enhance the overall appearance and customer experience. The function rooms will also be refurbished to provide an updated venue for conferences, luncheons, dinners and many other events. Outside, and subject to planning permission a new multi use games area will provide an excellent surface for football, netball and tennis.

The refurbishment will take place in phases over the next 22 months and whilst the centre will be open during that period there will be times when various parts of the centre, for example the swimming pools and sports hall will not be available for use. It is the aim to keep the fitness suite and soft play area open throughout the work.

A full schedule of the anticipated closure dates is available for customers' information at the Leisure Centre and on the website. It is the intention to minimise disruption to customers but due to the nature of the refurbishment it is inevitable that some customers will be inconvenienced.

One early change will be the relocation of the entrance to the Leisure Centre. A temporary reception will be provided to the rear of the building whilst the new front entrance, new fitness suite, new soft/adventure play area and crèche are constructed. This is necessary to allow the work to progress whilst keeping the Centre open.

Councillor David Sharland said:
"I am delighted that the scheme has been approved and look forward to work getting underway. We have been planning this project for some time and the investment we are making shows our commitment to the provision of modern leisure facilities for our residents."
