The new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at the Leatherhead Leisure Centre was officially opened on Monday 13th July 2009.

Football coaches and local secondary school students who had been invited to the afternoon’s event took full advantage of the new facilities and were joined by Mole Valley District Council Councillors and staff.

Students from Manor House School in Little Bookham had been invited to Leatherhead to help showcase the new facility at its opening, which they did by enjoying games of tennis and netball on the courts. The students were joined by Coerver Football Coaching, who took coaching sessions for an hour, while the LLC staff and building contractors, Volker Fitzpatrick, downed tools to compete in a 5 a side tournament. Watching the action and attending the opening were Councillor Tim Hall, Chairman of the Council; Councillor Jean Pearson, Leader of the Council; Councillor Ben Tatham, Portfolio Holder for Finance & Assets and Councillor David Sharland, Portfolio Holder for Health, Safety & Wellbeing.

The MUGA is a floodlit facility which has four pitches that can be used for football, netball and tennis. The opening of the MUGA is part of a large rolling refurbishment project of the LLC which began in March 2009. The refurbishment of the centre is scheduled for completion in December 2010 and, following the MUGA’s opening, the next phase for completion will be the new fitness suite, soft play facility and crèche; all available from October 2009,

Councillor David Sharland said “Judging by the outstanding quality of the new MUGA facility, LLC members can have every reason to be just as excited about the rest of the Centre’s refurbishments. The MUGA now provides everyone the choice of playing their favourite sports outdoors in a safe environment, and if early weather predictions are to be believed, this summer could provide the best opportunity in years for everyone to be outside enjoying various sports; why not take advantage of this and get down to the MUGA in Leatherhead?”.
