A new initiative to celebrate family life takes place 25-31 May 2009 featuring a jam-packed schedule of events, activities and competitions run across the country to bring families together.

Bank Holiday week 25 – 31st May – half term
 
Southwark’s pools are joining in with free swimming for parents with their children during public swiming times. 
 
Greg Carris, from the Southwark Centres said: “Parents usually pay – so it’s good to give them something free for a change. Swimming is an activity all the family can enjoy together, whatever the age gaps or abilities, and as we’ve just introduced free swimming for under 16’s, so with parents able to swim free for the week it’s a lovely opportunity to spend active time together – and taking a nice bite back at the credit crunch.”
 
National Family Week has already attracted an incredible amount of support from over a hundred national organisations, as well as celebrities, sports stars and political leaders, making it the largest coalition on family issues in the UK.
 
Grammy Award winner and soul singer, Seal, is signed up to the idea: “Family is such an important part of my life and it is something that Heidi and I value enormously. If National Family Week helps people to realise the worth of the people that they have around them then it will reward them no end. Having children and creating a family is such an amazing privilege. We should nurture and enjoy every moment that we spend together”. 
 
National Family Week is also running a number of competitions including the search to find the UK’s Family of the Year. If your family or a family you know is exceptionally charitable, courageous, adventurous or eccentric, log on to www.nationalfamilyweek.co.uk and make your nomination. Other competitions include the challenge to find the UK’s all time Favourite Family Recipe – submit your tasty dish on the website from 17th April, plus the Big Family Idea designed to get the nation thinking about ideas that could help improve family life in the UK.
