Sports Centres Free Open Day London 2012 Open Weekend
Katherine Cast of Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre in St John’s Road has been getting her skates on in preparation for a fantastic family Open Day as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend supported by BP. The Borough’s three sports centres are joining in with a series of events across the country enabling access to excellence in the arts, culture and sport and celebrating three years to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Saturday 25th July at Weald Sports Centre
Sunday 26th July at Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre
“It’s been a hectic few weeks getting organized”, says Katherine. “We have a whole range of free taster sessions so people can try things out under the guidance of one of our coaches, like badminton, swimming and stroke improvement or diving and there are free sessions too for youngsters in gymnastics and trampolining”.
If you’ve wondered just how fit you are and want some tips on how you could get fitter, you can book into a free Mini Health Check with one of the professional trainers. It only takes a few minutes and covers lung function tests - blowing into a tube, working out your percentage fat as well as your Body Mass Index from weight and height and then a simple assessment of your cardiovascular fitness.
Free family swimming sessions will run from 10am to 2pm and for those interested in trying some resistance training there’ll be introductions to using the gym led by professional fitness and health advisors.
The Weald Sports Centre in Cranbrook is also running free family swimming in the afternoon and competitions, plus free taster and coaching sessions, in judo, swimming, tennis and badminton. Gary Bennett, Centre Manager, commented: “With the general concerns about young people’s fitness and everyone generally keeping active, this is a great opportunity to find a new activity you enjoy under proper supervision”. Putlands Sports and Leisure Centre in Paddock Wood will also be taking part with free taster sessions.
All the centres are also offering a flat rate, six-week membership for just £50.00 (£40.00 at Putlands) if you want to take your new found activity through a longer test.
Visit the website www.tunbridgewells-leisure.com for more information or pick up timetable details at the centres. Some events are subject to booking so call early. Full listings, including Tunbridge Wells’ events, at www.london2012.com/openweekend
This year’s London 2012 Open Weekend follows the success of last year’s event, which launched the Cultural Olympiad and enabled over 700,000 people to become involved.
