Fusion and Bedford Borough Council run activity programme for homeless and disadvantaged

The King´s Arms Project is a Bedfordshire based charity that runs services for the homeless and disadvantaged including a night shelter, hostel, rough sleeper outreach, skills development courses (as part of the Pathways to Employment programme)and move-on housing.

They aim to be part of the solution in breaking the cycle of homelessness.  They tailor make support as far as possible,so each person is treated as an individual. Some clients become volunteers - their way of giving something back once they are settled and stable.

Fusion partnered with Bedford Borough Council Sports Development Team to provide a series of outdoor activities for young adults aged 16+ who are part of the Pathways to Employment programme at King´s Arms Project. Over 26 participants took part in the activities at Kempston Outdoor Centre over 8 weeks.   Sportivate funding was secured by the Borough Sports Development Team to fund the project which ran under the expert guidance of excellent instructors at Kempston Outdoor Centre.

A support worker quoted at the Kings Arms Project said `I had a conversation with Jake* this evening and he could barely stop talking about the climbing wall today.  He enjoyed it so much he was bragging about how well he had done but he had still been challenged on it. For the first time since he has been here he is glowing with a real sense of achievement.  He is also tired from physical exercise for the first time too. He was also talking with enthusiasm about being signed up to the bike maintenance and woodwork courses (with the Pathways to Employment Team at King´s Arms Project).  He was really pleased to have something to do with his time and kept him busy and fulfilled´.*Name changed to protect identity

Lisa Simpson, Sports & Community Development Manager for Fusion in Bedford said `This was a great project, which we hope to deliver again.  It is great to provide fun and active sessions for homeless people to take part in. Not only does this have a positive impact on health and well being but can facilitate pathways to volunteering and employment´.

Kempston Outdoor Centre is managed by Fusion Lifestyle, a leading registered charity which provides quality sport, leisure and fitness activities to local communities, in partnership with Bedford Borough Council.
