Southend Diving Programme to host the USA Diving Team

Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre is to host the USA Diving Team from 6th - 9th July as they train for the World Diving Championships being held in Budapest July 14th - 30th 2017.

The Team of 16 divers, seven Coaches and four support Staff are due to arrive on Thursday 6th July to train at the World Class Diving Centre in Garon Park, where they will be welcomed and supported by coaching staff from the Southend Diving Programme.

The GB Diving High Performance Director, Alexei Evangulov, recommended the facility to the USA based on the experiences of GB Diving´s use of the Centre many times for camps and events, including training for the Team GB Olympic Diving Team, since the Diving Pool opened in 2011.

Southend Diving Deputy Head Diving Coach, Bill Clark, said: "With the USA Team being ranked regularly in the top three diving Nations in the World, it will be a rare privilege to see them training here and for our divers and coaches to see some of the best divers in the world in action.

"We look forward to hosting them, as we have done for GB and other International Teams.  It is rewarding to know that our first-class facilities and the diving programme staff are being recognised internationally for their on-going contribution to competitive and performance diving.

"As well as competitive activities, the Southend Diving programme provides opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, with learn-to-dive classes and grass-root diving activities that are proving a real hit with local community."

The USA High Performance Director, Sean McCarthy, said: "Our main objectives in training in Southend-on-Sea is to acclimatise our Team USA Divers to the time zone of Budapest as compared to our varied four time zones in the states, and to train at a highly recommended world class water/dryland/conditioning diving venue - that being in Southend".

Cllr Ann Holland, Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism and the Economy, said: "It is a pleasure to be able to welcome the USA Diving Team to our world-class diving facilities at Garon Park.

"It shows how investing in our leisure services has enabled us to attract some of the best diving talent in the world.

"We hope they enjoy their time with us in Southend-on-Sea, and I wish them all the best for the duration of the tournament."
