London Youth Games Presentation Evening

Over 250 participants and parents from this years Balfour Beatty London Youth Games came along to Hounslow’s presentation evening, hosted by the Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Colin Ellar at the Civic Centre.

The awards evening is the final part of the London Youth Games and celebrates our success at the games, and gives us the chance to hand out our very own awards. Certificates were handed out to all involved in this year’s campaign and medals and trophies were presented to the successful competitors. In addition, three of Hounslow’s own awards were also presented by the Mayor; the Most Improved  Team, the Outstanding Contribution Award and the Team Of The Year.

Most Improved Team

This year’s most improved team award goes to the Girls Cricket Team who finished in 5th place which is an incredible 20 places higher than last year.

Outstanding Contribution Award

This award went to Chris Bamber, one of our many valued volunteers without whom our participation in this event would not be possible. Chris was actually a competitor last year and has gone on to be a very valuable coach and volunteer helper. Chris not only helped with the trials and selection of the mini games tag rugby team but he continued for the six weeks training sessions and then accompanied the team to the Mini Games at Crystal Palace. Not content with having contributed so much to support us in our work he then came to the Main Games Finals on Sunday at Crystal Palace.

Hounslow’s Team of the Year

No surprise that this year’s team of the year went to the Boys Basketball who won gold at this year’s Balfour Beatty London Youth Games winning one of the blue ribbon events. Councillor Collin Ellar, the Mayor of the London Borough of Hounslow, Jagdish Sharma, the Leader of the Council and Councillor Pritam Grewal, Lead Executive Member for Leisure and Well-being were all at Crystal Palace to support the boys as they saw off west London rivals Harrow in the semi-final 34-25.

The team’s solid defence proved to be Hounlsow’s secret weapon as they saw off a spirited Croydon side 62 – 44 in a hard fought final. It was Hounslow star Ben O’Hene’s last year in the competition, but he went out with a bang winning the Most Valuable Player Award and two tickets to the NBA match at the O2 in October. However Ben is the only player who will be too old to take part next year so we’re already looking forward to them coming back to defend their title next year!

The Hounslow Sports Development Team would like to thank all those who have given a helping hand to the Youth Games, without whom these great successes wouldn’t have been possible.
