Hounslow’s girls for the Super-8 finals!
Eight young girls from Hounslow took part in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Cricket Cup Qualifiers on Saturday 6th February. Despite snowy weather cancelling training sessions in January, they played some excellent cricket and were rewarded with two great victories over Harrow and Barnet, earning the Hounslow girls a place in the “Super 8” Finals for the first time in 14 years.
The Indoor Cricket Cup is the first event in the 2010 London Youth Games calendar and it took place at Harrow Leisure Centre.
The team of eight girls, aged between 11 and 13 have been coached by local teachers Andy Mawson and Jenny Halstead from the Heathland School and is made up from youngsters across four different schools around the London Borough of Hounslow.
They will now face teams from Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Greenwich, Haringey, Hammersmith and Fulham and Lewisham for the opportunity to be crowned “Champions of London” on the 6th March at the fantastic Lord’s Indoor Cricket School, a training ground also used by the England Senior Cricket Team.
Jo Valks, community sports development manager was delighted with the performance and is now hoping the boys’ team can equal the girls success at their qualifying rounds at the end of this month.
