Escape Pain Course

The City of London Sports Development Team are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Health Innovation Network to bring you ESCAPE.

Have you been experiencing knee or hip pain for longer than 6 months? Are you able to undertake exercise? Are you keen to understand your condition and learn how to cope with pain better?

Enabling Self-management and Coping with Arthritic Pain using Exercise, ESCAPE-pain, is a rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain that integrates educational self-management and coping strategies with an exercise regimen individualised for each participant. It helps people understand their condition, teaches them simple things they can help themselves with, and takes them through a progressive exercise programme so they learn how to cope with pain better.

Robust evaluation shows that ESCAPE-pain:

  • reduces pain
  • improves physical function
  • improves the psychosocial consequences of pain - depression, people´s sense of being in control of their problems, self-confidence and self-esteem
  • reduces healthcare and utilisation costs

The programme is delivered to small groups of people in 12 classes, twice a week, for six weeks. There are two components to the programme;

  1. an education component where people learn about the problem, what might be causing it, why they experience pain, simple ways to cope and self-manage their problems
  2. an exercise regimen where people undertake a progressive tailored to each individuals needs and abilities
