Fusion's Sports Development team in partnership with the Active Charnwood Team are proud to be providing a well-rounded variety of inclusive sports at Loughborough Leisure Centre.
Ian and Emma's have had a fantastic time playing sitting volleyball since it was launched at the centre a fewe months ago; here's their story:
"I have had MS for over 21 years and have experienced a gradual decline in my mobility. I mostly use my wheelchair now. There is very little my husband and I can do on an even keel, that we both enjoy. Ian has played volleyball in a local recreational team for several years, I go along and support them, but it's not the same as being part of the team. In December 2017, I started looking for an activity that we could both benefit from and enjoy doing something together.
As I was surfing the net looking for opportunities, I stumbled across some information about a Sitting Volleyball group that was starting up in Loughborough. We both turned up on Monday, not really knowing what to expect. We met Mena the coach and several others, who had played Sitting Volleyball at various levels, including in the national team.
My first session was hard, I managed to do the warm ups before I had to sit back and watch. Gradually over the last 6 months my fitness levels have increased, my skills have improved immensely, and I feel a real part of the team rather than an outsider. This group has given me extra confidence and has brought me and Ian closer as we talk about and take part in the training and competitions. Yes, it can be hard work, but the team are very supportive and understanding and accepting of my fatigue.
It has been one of the best things I have done for a long time and I strongly recommend people who think they 'can't' to start thinking 'maybe' I can and try different activities out until you find the one that fits" ,
Nick Elevate, the Sports and Community Development Manager at Fusion Lifestyle, commented: 'It's fantastic that we have been able to develop such a diverse offer across our leisure facilities in Charnwood and I am delighted that Ian and Emma are able to utilise our sitting volleyball session'.
Carla Filomena Silva, the lead volunteer Coach for the sitting volleyball group commented:
If you would like to come along and try the session, it runs every Monday 6-8pm. We offer the first session free as a trial and members are free. We are really keen to bring new participants to our group and 'contaminate' them with our passion for the sport. Independently of your ability level, you will find a very supportive and fun group to work with. We welcome participants with and without impairments. If you are not sure whether this sport/ group suits you, just try it... we will love to meet you!
