Meadowlands Leisure Centre (Tavistock) and Parklands Leisure Centre (Okehampton) have launched a new five-week Nordic Walking programme. Using the power of walking poles and open to everyone, Nordic Walking is perfect for those looking to improve their fitness levels and have fun outdoors.

Commencing from the 23rd and 25th May, 10 - 11pm at Meadowlands, and 12 - 1pm at Parklands, the programme will help participants improve their fitness through walking, using poles to burn more calories and walk further for longer. Increasing the use of the upper body, anybody, of any age and fitness level can take part in Nordic Walking, with more than 10 million people enjoying the outdoor activity every year.

Denise Horner, an Independent Qualified Nordic Walking Instructor of Dartmoor Nordic Walking, will guide the group around various locations on Dartmoor and said: ""Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking, but uses specifically designed poles and a technique that helps to push people along - it is not to be confused with trekking.

"By using the upper body and 90% of muscles, people can burn up to 46% more calories than walking without poles! It is great for toning, endurance and strength, and is suitable for everyone. We never walk so fast that you can´t talk, but we walk so you will feel energised and exercised, but not worn out!"
