If you're a beginner starting out at the gym or are trying to get back into a routine after a break, sometimes the thought of attending can be a bit daunting. Although you are not alone, as this is very common and also completely normal when trying something new!
Here are some tips and advice about starting out to help you build your confidence, be ready to take on a challenge and smash your goals!
Learn the Layout
Before going along for your first session, you could ask at reception for a tour of the gym. This way, you can familiarise yourself with the layout and the equipment available to use on your first visit. You can then start deciding what you would like to use during your session, and formulate your own workout plan so you go along focused!
Prepare your Plan
Now you know what to expect and what equipment is available, you can put together a plan that suits you and what you would like to achieve. It might be worth doing some research beforehand or speaking to a member of the centre team for further advice on the most effective use of your time.
To make sure you stay on track, you could make a note of your plan. It might come in handy if you need to switch your routine around when sharing the space with others.
Have you got an organised gym bag ready? Some essentials to remember include a drink to stay hydrated, or perhaps a refillable water bottle, toiletries to freshen up after your workout, a towel if you prefer and maybe even a healthy snack for afterwards.
Ensure that you wear appropriate and comfortable clothing that you feel confident in. It is recommended to wear items that have been specifically designed for exercising in, as they will be far more breathable and flexible to your movements.
Take a Friend Along
If you're not sure about going to the gym on your own, then take along a friend with you for support. If they're a regular at the gym, they'll be able to help you out and guide you. If they're new to us and want to give the gym a try, they can register for a free gym pass which allows one free session to give it a go!
Find the Best Time for You
If you would prefer to go to the gym when it's quieter, try and avoid peak times. You can also use the Fusion Lifestyle app to view how many people have booked on to each session by checking how many spaces are available, this should give you a rough idea how busy it will be. As you get more comfortable and confident in the gym, you may want to try visiting at different times to fit in with your day-to-day routine.
When you've completed your first session, congratulate yourself on making the first step! How did you find it? Is there anything that you would do differently next time? Take things at your own pace and work to your ability, everyone is there for their own personal reasons and you are no different.
