The earliest roots of the lido trace back to its original use as a brewery reservoir. The structure was later transformed into a public swimming facility in 1912, marking the official birth of Shepton Mallet Lido as a recreational destination.
The lido became especially popular in the 1950s, when open air swimming surged across the UK. During this era, Shepton Mallet Lido established the basic layout recognisable today:
• a 25 metre heated main pool,
• a children’s/toddler pool,
• and expansive grassed areas for sunbathing.
Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the lido became a beloved seasonal fixture for families, schools, and clubs, its quiet residential location offering a peaceful escape during the summer months.
A major turning point came in 2006, when the lido underwent extensive refurbishment to secure its long term future. Upgrades included:
• improvements to pool infrastructure,
• enhancements to visitor facilities,
• and an innovative eco heating system using recycled warmth from the neighbouring Brothers Cider Factory.
The lido’s sustainable heating system became one of its most celebrated features. Although the pool now runs on a separate boiler, reconnecting with Brothers Cider remains a future ambition.
For many years, the lido operated from late May to September as the town’s go to summer spot, known for its family friendly splash pads, inflatables, picnic areas, and private hire options. More recently, it has expanded with new timetables, moonlight swims, and a fully modernised cashless system, strengthening its role as a versatile community venue.
In May 2023, Shepton Mallet marked the lido’s 111th anniversary with a town wide celebration featuring aquathlons, races, music, and market stalls.
From its origins as a repurposed reservoir to its current status as a thriving leisure hub, Shepton Mallet Lido has evolved with its community. Its mix of historic charm, eco innovation, and family friendly facilities has secured its place as one of Somerset’s most valued public spaces.
